At 7:30 a.m., a school resource officer apprehended the driver at Scotts Ridge Middle School who left an empty 1.8-ounce bottle of alcohol in the bathroom, according to the statement from Superintendent Deborah Low at Hamlet Hub.

The driver, from Bus 25, was arrested and charged with criminal attempted risk of injury to a minor, Hamlet Hub said. The NewsTimes.com identified the driver who was arrested as Kathleen Sweikert, 46.

"As we all recognize, this is a disturbing incident," Low said at Hamlet Hub. "While we have no indication that students were in danger this morning, any involvement with alcohol by a school bus driver on the job presents serious risks."

The school bus driver has been suspended and will not return, she said. A substitute driver completed the Wednesday morning runs, she said.

"We are reviewing the terms and conditions of continuing to work with First Student and the drivers," Low said at Hamlet Hub.
