Shortly before 1:45 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 31, officers from the Prince William County Police Department responded to a home in the 13400 block of Orangewood Drive in Woodbridge to investigate a reported shooting.
Upon arrival at the residence, officers say they found a 51-year-old man - whose name has not been released - suffering from a gunshot wound to his lower body and were able to provide immediate first aid until paramedics arrived at the scene to ass.
Officials said that the victim was transported by emergency personnel to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The initial investigation determined that the victim was inside the home when he heard a loud noise by the front door, and when he investigated, he found an unknown man smashing the glass screen door and attempting to force his way inside the home, according to police.
Investigators say that the victim immediately confronted the suspect who then retrieved a gun and while the two men struggled over the weapon, a round went off, striking the 51-year-old man.
The suspect fled prior to police arriving in the area. No additional injuries or property damage were reported.
Police described the suspect as being a Hispanic man in his mid-20s who was last seen wearing a baseball-style hat, black mask, and black hooded sweatshirt. No other information was provided by investigators.
