They’ll also feature some fun activities for kids at the Open House, which runs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. this Sunday, rain or shine, at Hillsdale’s police department, fire department and Volunteer Ambulance Corps.
“Through the years, the overwhelming response from community members is extremely positive as they typically enjoy a wide variety of demonstrations and attractions,” Hillsdale Police Chief Chip Stalter said.
The police department, for one, has a rich history: It dates back before 1900, when a single constable patrolled town. The first department was created 90 years ago. It now has 20 officers who do lots more than patrol Hillsdale’s 54 linear miles of streets. Many of them work with youngsters in town, acting as positive role models, sounding boards and mentors.
Stalter also emphasizes community policing, an approach that relies on solid personal relationships with many of Hillsdale’s 11,000 residents and business owners, who are the eyes and ears of the community at large.
Figures show the department responds to roughly 14,000 calls, requests or referrals from the public each year.
