Scarsdale Science Bowl Team Headed for Nationals

SCARSDALE, N.Y. – A team of students from Scarsdale High School will head for Washington, D.C., April 26 to 30 to compete in the National Science Bowl competition, school officials said.

The team qualified for nationals for the second straight year by placing first at the regional competition Saturday, March 3, at CUNY City College.

Scarsdale was undefeated in a quiz bowl format of questions on topics that include biology, physics, earth and space and chemistry.

"The game begins with a 'toss-up' question that is free for either team to answer," said teacher and team adviser Valerie Blood. "If they answer correctly they receive four points and qualify for a 10-point bonus question. We were down 40-20 at the half and, in the second eight-minute half, we came back and won the finals. Jessica Lam answered a genetics question that completely turned the momentum of the game around. Andrew Guo answered several challenging questions to get the lead."

Competing in addition to Guo and Lam were Brian Chieu, Roger Pellegrini and Elliot Liskin.
