Fire Department Extinguishes Larchmont House Blaze

UPDATE, 6:25 p.m.: The American Red Cross has provided lodging and financial assistance for all five people from the home, which include the homeowner, an elderly woman, her female care taker and her three family members, said Caroline Sherwin, volunteer spokesperson. All five live in the home, which has been determined uninhabitable. Five volunteers responded to the fire, one of whom is currently with the homeowner in the hospital.

"He just called me to let me know she's ok," Sherwin said. "He's reassuring her and giving her that emotional support you need after something as stressful as this."

Weaver Street, which was closed from Althea Lane to Murray Avenue, has been reopened.

LARCHMONT, N.Y. - An elderly woman was taken to the hospital Friday after firefighters extinguished a fire at her house on Weaver Street.

Town of Mamaroneck Fire Chief Brendan Collins said the woman was taken to the hospital to be evaluated. The extent and type of injuries were not known at 4 p.m. Friday.

An emergency call was received at about 2:30 p.m. Friday about the fire, which began in a second floor bedroom. When Police arrived there were flames coming out of a second story window. Officers were able to escort five people in the home - including the elderly woman and her caretaker - out of the house. Firefighters arrived a few minutes later and were able to knock the fire down within 20 minutes.

Fire and water damage were contained to the second floor bedroom and an adjoining hallway, Collins said. It was not yet known what caused the fire.

Weaver Street from Althea Lane to Murray Avenue was expected to remain closed until about 5 p.m., Collins said.

The New Rochelle Fire Department assisted Mamaroneck firefighters.

The American Red Cross, including Eli Russ, the president of the American Red Cross Club at Mamaroneck High School, arrived to the scene around 4:15 p.m. to speak with the other people who were inside the home to make arrangements for them. Collins said the house is uninhabitable.
