FAIRFIELD, Conn. — An Ansonia man with a long list of prior convictions led officers on a brief chase Saturday afternoon before a K9 officer bit him on the buttocks and detained him, police said.

Shortly after 4:30 p.m., officers attempted to stop a Dodge Neon with a stolen license plate at Exit 19 of I-95 in Southport, police said.

The vehicle sped off and the driver, Andre Genest, 28, of Maple Street, bailed from the car before it drove across two lawns and came to rest near an Osborne Lane mailbox, police said.

Officers quickly set up a perimeter, and Officer Evan Kaesmann and K9 Maverick tracked Genest several yards before Maverick apprehended him, police said.

In the car, officers found several packages of heroin, tools, jewelry, ski masks, latex gloves, a gun-cleaning kit and a locked black sentry safe, police said.

Genest was charged with theft of plates, misuse of plates, reckless driving, engaging police in a pursuit, evading responsibility, interfering with an officer/resisting arrest and second-degree reckless endangerment, police said.

Genest has a long list of prior convictions on several charges, including sales of illegal drugs, possession of narcotics, threatening, harassment and breach of peace, police said.

He was treated and released for minor puncture wounds to his buttocks and hand at St. Vincent’s Medical Center.

He was held on $5,100 bond and is expected to appear in court on Sept. 12.
