MIDDLEBURY, Conn. - Robert (Bob) Charles Thies of Middlebury, formerly of Ridgefield, died Sunday, Nov. 10. He was 84.
Thies was born Nov. 25, 1928, in Queens, New York, to Henry and Ellie (Lange) Thies. He graduated from The City College of New York with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. He served in the Navy during the Korean War as an electronics specialist. After the Navy, he took additional classes in chemistry at NYU, before beginning his career as a chemist at GAF. He became a salesman in the GAF’s St. Louis office. From there he moved to the San Francisco, Chicago and New York offices before he left to join Union Carbide Corporation in 1963. At Union Carbide, he worked in sales and marketing at the firm’s headquarters in New York City and then subsequently Danbury. He was the marketing manager of the Hydrocarbons Group until his retirement in 1986. He resided in Ridgefield from 1978 to 2007.
Thies is survived by his sons, Scott (Sharon) Thies of Seattle, Washington and Mark (Kathy) Thies of North Salem, N.Y.; three grandchildren. He was predceased by his wife, Joy; and brother Henry (“Hank”) Thies of Smithtown, N.Y.
Calling hours are Friday, Nov. 15 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Kane Funeral Home 25 Catoonah St., Ridgefield. Funeral services will take place Saturday, Nov. 16 at 12 p.m. in St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 351 Main St., Ridgefield with Rev. Whitney Altopp, officiating.
