There are a number of reasons for the tree removal. First, as the trees grow, they are dropping branches and creating a safety hazard for pedestrians, town officials told the newstimes.com. One of the tree's roots are also beginning to push against the bricks of the building and causing them to buckle, newstimes.com reported.

Ridgefield also received a $180,000 state grant to help rehabilitate the outside area in front of Town Hall, including a repair to the front steps. None of this can be done while the two trees still stand, newstimes.com said.

The town plans on replacing them with a pair of Chinese elms, according to newstimes.com
