RIDGEFIELD, Conn. Come Monday morning, you will no longer be able to take books out of the Ridgefield Library at its historic home on Main Street.
That building will close its doors for the last time at 5 p.m. Saturday. They wont be open again for nearly two years as the space is rebuilt.
In fact, there will be no library in Ridgefield until 9 a.m. Sept. 4, when the library will be completely moved into its temporary location on Governor Street.
While there will be changes to our services due to the size and nature of our temporary space, we have some very creative plans under way to remain a vital and vibrant part of Ridgefielders lives while we are awaiting completion of our beautiful new building, library Executive Director Chris Nolan said in a statement.
Some of those changes include holding limited events over the two weeks it is moving to the Governor Street location. Many events will be held at the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum and the Ridgefield Parks and Recreation Center. But even after the library opens in the temporary location, not all the events will be held there.
The library will work with other organizations around town, branding its events as Ridgefield Library @ the new location, said Mary Rindfleisch, the librarys assistant director.
The library's events arent the only things that will be altered. Once the temporary location opens Sept. 4, patrons wont have access to the full catalog because there wont be enough space.
The temporary space is about half the size of the current building, so the library has made decisions about what parts of the collection will go and what will go into storage. Residents can use their library cards at libraries in nearby towns.
Construction of the new building will take 16 to 18 months. The library will post updates on its website, Facebook page and Twitter.
