Ridgefield Clears Fallen Trees As Crews Restore Power After Huge Storm

Update 2:30 p.m. RIDGEFIELD, Conn. -- A massive cleanup job was under Wednesday after a powerful storm blew through town Tuesday, toppling trees and shutting down power to over half of the town's customers.

The damage was extensive Tuesday evening, with more than 5,000 customers without power in town and dozens of fallen trees blocking roads, that First Selectman Rudy Marconi declared a state of emergency in town. Ridgefield police said that there were no major accidents or injuries reported during the storm, and that all roads were open Wednesday.

But by 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Eversource had restored power to many customers. The remaining outages were:

Danbury: 72 customers
Redding: 952 or 24 percent of town, down from a high of nearly 2,000 customers
Ridgefield: 1,076 or 10 percent of town, down from a high of 5,425 customers

A number of cars were severely damaged when trees fell on them during the storm.

Resident Dona Giorgadze, a community adviser to the Daily Voice, said the storm lasted only 15 minutes but was very strong. Another Ridgefield resident, whose car is pictured above, suffered a few broken bones, when a tree crashed on it on Grove Street in town during the storm.

Cleanup was continuing across town on Ridgefield, with Eversource crews working on power lines and town crews clearing branches.
