RIDGEFIELD, CONN. -- The Ridgefield Playhouse will offer a TV writing workshop this fall for those wanna-be teleplay writers.

Katie Torpey will teach the class from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesdays from Sept. 17 through Nov. 5 at the Playhouse. This unique adult ed course will help aspiring writers translate their passion to write for television into a new TV series.

During the eight week-class, students will learn how to flesh out their TV show ideas, create a series bible and write the pilot (first) episode of the series. The focus will be how to develop a solid plot, structure the series so it has longevity, capture a compelling theme and create complex characters that audiences will love and want to follow.

Students also will analyze what made TV shows from the past so popular and successful. The course's objective is to help students create, develop and write original TV shows that they potentially could sell to Hollywood.

An award-winning writer and filmmaker with a masters degree from UCLA Film School, Torpey has worked for numerous studios and networks and sold several scripts. She has written and directed for both TV and film. Her successes include the studio films "The Perfect Man" and "Truth about Kerry", which she directed. Torpey also directed the self-help online product Design Your Life, being launched this summer, and she co-created the animated TV show "Mother UP!" starring Eva Longoria, which will premiere this October.

To sign up for the class, which costs $300, call the box office at 203-438-5795 or go online.

The Ridgefield Playhouse is a not-for-profit performing arts center at 80 East Ridge, parallel to Main Street.
