RIDGEFIELD, Conn. - The following is comment from resident Ed Tyrell to the Ridgefield Board of Selectmen regarding the new teachers contract for 2013-16.
You have before you a contract that includes raises totaling nearly 9 percent over three years. To put that 9 percent in perspective, during the last four years, Social Security recipients have received total increases of only 5.3 percent. During the last three Januarys, 2.8 million federal employees have received cost of living increases of Zero, Zero and Zero.
To make matters worse, the teachers received a 3 percent raise last July. So, over a four-year period, they will get raises totaling nearly 12 percent. Those are the kind of raises that get given out during boom times, not when we are in the fifth year of a recession.
This contract gets worse by the day. Please reject it or send it to a Town Meeting.
