The initiative is led by the American Cancer Society, the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Colorectal Cancer Roundtable, an organization co-founded by the ACS and the CDC.
“We are thrilled to team up with the American Cancer Society and many other organizations to improve colorectal cancer screening rates nationwide,” said Fonteyne.
“We are asking our members and their businesses to come together and help us talk to friends and family who are over 50 years of age about getting screened. Together, we can help reduce the impact of colorectal cancer as a major public health problem and ultimately save lives,” he said.
Fonteyne is working with Robert Dickey, president of Randstad, Technologies & Engineering and current chair of CEOs Against Cancer, to rally the 32-member New England chapter of CEOs Against Cancer to promote colon-cancer awareness.
Colorectal cancer is the nation’s second-leading cause of cancer-related deaths; however it is one of only a few cancers that can be prevented. Through proper colorectal cancer screening, doctors can find and remove hidden growths before they become cancerous. Removing polyps can prevent cancer altogether.
In the National Colorectal Cancer Roundtable's “80% by 2018,” initiative, nearly 200 organizations have committed to eliminating colorectal cancer as a major public health problem and are working toward the shared goal of 80 percent of adults age 50 and older being regularly screened for colorectal cancer by 2018.
