Snow Day: Bethel, Danbury Residents Digging Out As Storm Continues To Rage

BETHEL, Conn. — With up to 14 inches of snow expected to bury the area and with schools and offices shut down, the McGuire family of Bethel -- along with thousands of other families across Fairfield County -- are staying close to home Thursday.

Cyndie McGuire is spending the day inside, working from home. But for her 12-year-old daughter Hannah, today is a day of fun with her friend Brooke.

"They will go sleigh riding, have snowball fights and make a snowman," McGuire said.

Hannah has already taken her beagle mix, Lyric, out in the snow in past winters, but this is the first time that Jack, the family’s shorthair cat, has seen snow.

“He always cries and begs to go outside when we take Lyric out," McGuire said. So, this time, Paul McGuire finally took him outside -- carrying him.

“Since it was so windy, Jack got a faceful of snow and didn’t seem to like it too much, so he was quickly brought back inside,” Cyndie McGuire said.

For Danbury resident Barry Abrams, his morning of shoveling is quickly turning into an afternoon project.

“I went out about 10:30. Normally, it takes me about 45 minutes to do my driveway. I’ve been out for 45 minutes and I haven't even gotten a third of the way through," he said. "It would probably take well over an hour-and-a-half, if not more, to do the entire driveway the first time."

"It is supposed to stop snowing around 4 p.m., so if I finish at 12, there will be another four inches coming down."

Abrams said that not only was the snow was coming down heavily, but also "the wind is howling too, which it wasn’t this morning. It started to howl about 9 to 10 o'clock, so I am now worried about losing power."

Abrams, who — with his wife, Lisa — has a 13-year-old son, Spencer, said he is glad the to get the early notification of school closings.

"It was a good job by Dr. Pascarella (Superintendent of Danbury Schools) to let everyone know on Wednesday afternoon," said Abrams, who is working from home today.

Abrams wants to have his driveway completely plowed since Spencer, who is a competitive ice hockey player, might have practice tonight at the Danbury Ice Area.

"We have to be prepared because if there is a practice, we go,” he said. "We have a game tomorrow night outdoors at the Greenwich Skating Club, and they have to clear that rink."
