Sunday’s Norwalk Sprint Triathlon and Duathlon begins at 6:30 a.m. at Shady Beach.
The race, which is put on by TriFitness of Fairfield, was formerly a women’s only event. The race also has a new sponsor, Swim Seventy, which plans to open later this year at 8 Willard St. in Norwalk.
“We decided late last year to change it to include men,’’ said race director Pascale Butcher, the owner of TriFitness. “I don’t think a lot of people have become aware that it changed over from an all-women’s event.”
The triathlon includes a half-mile swim, 11-mile bike ride and 3.1 mile run. The duathlon is a 1.5 mile run, 11 mile bike ride and 3.1 mile run.
The race has several nice features that distinguish it from other events, Butcher said. “The race is perfect for beginners or seasoned athletes,’’ Butcher said. “And people can form their own relay teams.”
The prizes are also unique. Swim Seventy will offer three-month memberships to the fastest men and women from Norwalk, and the most creative and fun tutu worn by men and women.
Butcher’s training facility move to Swim Seventy when it opens later this year. “It’s going to be a great addition to the community,’’ Butcher said. “It’s going to give us more room and puts everything in one place. We’re looking forward to it opening.”
Part of the race proceeds benefit The Caroline House of Bridgeport. The Caroline House is a comprehensive nondenominational education center teaching literacy and life skills to economically disadvantaged immigrant women and children.
