Westport’s Henry Wynne and Ridgefield’s Trevor Hopper placed among Virginia’s top five runners. Wynne, a sophomore and a graduate of Staples, finished fourth on the 8k (nearly 5-mile) course in 24:02. He was the first Cavalier to cross the finish line.
Hopper, also a sophomore and Ridgefield High grad, finished eighth overall in 24:09. He was Virginia’s No. 3 runner.
Connor Rog of Fairfield, a Fairfield Prep grad, also runs for the Cavaliers. He was not in Virginia’s lineup for this race.
Virginia won the meet easily, compiling 41 points. Oklahoma was second with 58.
"We have been putting a lot of work in since the summer and it was nice to come out, have a good effort and have a big pack up front to win the race,” Wynne said on the Virginia website. "In training, we have been finishing up big workouts in a pack so we were thinking if we get a good group up front, we can use each other and do well on the day. We were confident from our workouts and training, but now to come out here and face some good teams and do well, our confidence is just going to roll on to Wisconsin and the championship season."
Virginia came into the race ranked No. 9 in the country. The Cavaliers will learn more about how they stack up against national competition in the adidas Invitational on Oct. 16 in Madison, Wisc. Host Wisconsin is ranked No. 4 in the nation.
The Cavaliers return to action Oct. 16, when they compete in the Wisconsin adidas Invitational in Madison, Wis.
