Construction on the facility, which includes more than 100,000 square feet of space, began in June 2012. The project has been in the planning stages for three years.

Superstorm Sandy last November caused some construction delays, and a harsh winter further hampered efforts to install parking. In February, co-director Ray Franklin said he hoped the facility would be open in March.

The official opening Monday was announced on Facebook.

The dome is a state-of-the-art corporate and special event complex. It is the largest domed facility on the East Coast, according to a business website. Soccer, lacrosse, volleyball, wrestling and field hockey are some of the sports that can be played at the dome. It is also offering summer camps in July and August.

To learn more about the dome, call 203-778-DOME (3663), send an email to info@danburysportsdome.com. or visit its website. It is open 6 a.m. to midnight.
