The Young Scientist Challenge is one of the nation's premier science competitions for students in grades 5 through 8. Students submit short videos describing a new invention or solution to address an everyday problem that impacts them, their families, their communities or the global population. Finalists receive a summer assignment to develop an invention under the mentorship of a 3M scientist.

Bhagavatula, who is 14 years old and in eighth grade at Middlebrook Middle School, came up with a solution for cleaning up oil spills using biomass. She hopes to invent a natural sorbet using pomegranate husks and orange peels to replace current, environmentally damaging solutions.

Dr. Döne Demirgöz will be Bhagavatula's 3M scientist mentor. To learn more about Bhagavatula and her project, click here.
