Western Connecticut State University Readies For Homecoming

DANBURY, Conn. -- Western Connecticut State University in Danbury is hosting dozens of events for alumni, students and families for its Homecoming 2013.

The week's events begin Oct. 13 and run through Oct. 19 at the Danbury campus, according to a notice from the university. 

"WCSU has certainly changed as it continues to grow," representatives said in the notice. "Homecoming is a perfect time for alumni to reunite with former classmates, and families to reunite with their students on campus. Come see the campus and partake in the many activities planned for Western’s alumni, students, parents, families and friends. Special activities have been planned for the entire university community including the return of the Homecoming Bonfire and Fireworks Celebration. Come home to celebrate WCSU and the exciting university it is today. We look forward to seeing you." 

Representatives also extended "a special welcome to members of the Class of 1963," which will celebrate the 50th class reunion, according to the release.

Oct. 13 

The WCSU Recreation Department will host its annual Campus-to-Campus 5K Road Race to benefit the WCSU student fitness and wellness programs at 9 a.m. Sunday. 

Alumni, students, parents and families are invited to attend the WCSU Department of Theatre Arts production of "Two Nights Near Doolin," an original play by Louisa Burns-Bisogno, directed by Pam McDaniel, associate professor and chair of the WCSU Department of Theatre Arts at 2 p.m., Sunday, at Berkshire Hall.

Oct. 14

Inflatable Carnival. 7:30 p.m. Location TBD. Free and open to WCSU students. Sponsored by the Inter-Residence Hall Association.

Oct. 15

Plonia Nixon, A Retrospective Art Viewing. The Gallery at Higgins Hall will hold a Retrospective Exhibition of Plonia Nixon, a Department of Art faculty member since 1981. The exhibit will feature more than 40 years of work spanning a range of styles and media including, drawings, paintings, pastels and collage.

Special Homecoming Themed Dinner. Join students, alumni and staff for a special Homecoming themed dinner prepared by the school's Sodexo chefs. Menu will include: pretzel dogs, Barbecue beef brisket sliders, breaded honey barbecue wings, chili cheese dip with tortilla chips, bacon cheddar potato skins with chipotle cream dip, assorted stuffed breads and chocolate cake.

Oct. 16 

Percussion Ensemble Concert. Conducted by David Smith. Donations to support the Department of Music will be accepted. For more information call 203-837-8350. 8 p.m., Ives Concert Hall, White Hall WCSU Midtown campus. Free and open to the public.

Oct. 17 

The Food Dude. The Food Network's Kevin Roberts, chef, restaurateur, author and spokesperson, will speak at WCSU. Noon to 2 p.m., Theater, Student Center, WCSU Midtown campus. Free and open to the university community. Sponsored by the WCSU HPX Club.

Oct. 18 

Hall Of Fame Dinner Celebration. Help celebrate the accomplishments of the alumni athletes, coaches and supporters being inducted into the 2013 Athletic Hall of Fame: Nicole Corbin '06 (Women's Soccer), Tom Crucitti '69 (Men's Soccer0, Joseph Giaquinto '70 (Football, Men's Basketball, Baseball, Men's Soccer), James Krayeske (Support: First WCSU Football Coach), Christin Morgatto '05 (Women's Basketball), Alicia O'Brien '83, '86, '95 (Softball Coach/Associate Athletic Director) and Tina Shanahan O'Marra '98, '05 (Women's Basketball). 6 p.m. Amber Room Colonnade, 1 Stacey Road., Danbury. Cost is $75/person or $700/Table of 10.

For Oct. 18 and Homecoming Day, Oct. 19, the WCSU shuttle hours will be extended.

Oct. 19 

Homecoming barbecue: Join the university community at this Homecoming feast. Menu includes: BBQ ribs, fried chicken, macaroni & cheese, southern greens, sweet potato casserole, coleslaw, cornbread, hummingbird cupcakes, sweet potato cupcakes with cream cheese frosting, pecan pie cupcakes, warm apple cider, sweet tea, coffee and decaf. 2:30 to 4:30 p.m., front of Athletic Stadium, WCSU Westside campus.

WCSU Volleyball vs. Wheaton. 3 p.m., Feldman Arena, O'Neill Center, WCSU Westside campus. Free and open to the public.

WCSU Football vs. Fitchburg State 5 p.m., Athletic Stadium, WCSU Westside campus.
