NORWALK, Conn.  – Twenty-two Center for Global Studies students from Brien McMahon High School in Norwalk will travel — with all-expenses paid — to Japan from Dec. 17 through Dec. 25.

The trip is part of a fully funded, large-scale youth exchange program between Japan and the United States called The Kakehashi Project. The Kakehashi Project is commissioned by the Japan-U.S. Educational Commission with the goal of boosting tourism and interest in Japan, and enhancing international understanding of the nation.

CGS students and three chaperones will receive free transportation to Tokyo and Okinawa. Lodging, food and local transportation will also be provided. Additionally, students will participate in a three-day homestay, giving them the opportunity to be fully immersed in the Japanese culture.

“Our students are driven by their passion to learn languages, and gain cultural understanding as a way to experience the world in a different way. We are incredibly grateful for this generous gift, which will provide CGS students with the opportunity to engage their curiosities about Japan’s unique culture and people,” said CGS Director Julie Parham.

Interested CGS students were selected for this trip via lottery. In February, CGS will reciprocate the exchange by hosting 26 students from Japan.

The Center for Global Studies at Brien McMahon High School is an inter-district magnet school focused on teaching students the languages, culture, history, and literature of China, Japan and the Middle East. Through the study of Arabic, Chinese, and Japanese language and cultural immersion study tours overseas, students have the opportunity to become informed, active, and compassionate scholars and global citizens. Selected students attend CGS from all over Fairfield County including Norwalk, Darien, Ridgefield, Fairfield, Bridgeport and Stamford.
