RIDGEFIELD, CONN. -- Volunteers have formed an organization to support instrumental music programs at Ridgefield High School.

The group, known as Ridgefield Music Matters, will be a nonprofit comprised of high school band and orchestra parents, school officials said.

“It’s such a thrill to have the support of parents and community,” said Michael McNamara, the school's director of music. “Enthusiastic parents foster enthusiastic kids, and Ridgefield Music Matters will help music students receive the encouragement and recognition they deserve.”

According to McNamara, RMM members will provide support to the musical director with programming, concerts and off-site opportunities, as well as assist in event promotion and publicity.

The new organization will raise funds to provide items and services that cannot be reasonably covered by the Ridgefield school budget, he said.

To that end, it has created a line of “spirit wear” designed to promote support of the music program.

According to the organization’s bylaws, all parents of current high school students enrolled in instrumental courses are considered active members of the group. There is no membership fee, and active members receive one vote on all matters for which there is a motion to vote, McNamara said.

Associate members -- who do not have voting privileges -- include all students in the instrumental program, alumni, faculty, and members of the community who wish to foster the purpose of the organization.

“We want our kids to feel like they are a part of a community, and something bigger than themselves,” McNamara said. “We want them to feel at home here, and RMM will help convey that message.”
