RIDGEFIELD, Conn. -- Three seventh-grade history teachers at East Ridge Middle School will receive the inaugural Anna Keeler Award for “Excellence in History and Civics Education."

“I am extremely proud and honored to be thought of for this award,” said teacher Mike Settanni. “It has been my pleasure to work with Keeler Tavern Museum to help kids in our town appreciate local history. I was also extremely thankful for the tremendous amount of work that took place on KTM’s part. The kids really did learn a lot and I personally used that day as the kickoff for my teams’ Civil War projects.”

Settanni, along with Andrea Donigian and Steve Ruland are being honored for their partnership with the Keeler Tavern Museum in developing a pilot program to teach the impact the Civil War had on Ridgefield.

“It was the unstinting support of our education partners from East Ridge Middle School that allowed us to develop a successful seventh-grade pilot program about Ridgefield’s Civil War years,” said Hildi Grob, Keeler Tavern Museum executive director. “For the first time, we were able to provide some 300 seventh-graders with a wonderful authentic experience here on our campus using the museum’s resources to teach local history as a window onto the larger national stage.”

Joan Payden will present the award at the Keeler Tavern Museum's annual Gala Oct. 30. Payden also is being honored for her role in launching the museum's education iInitiative.

The gala takes place from 7-11 p.m. at the Salem Golf Club in North Salem. The event will feature cocktails, dinner, silent and live auctions, casino games, a photo booth, dancing and a live band.

Tickets are $150 per person and sponsorship levels are available. Half the price of each ticket is tax deductible.

For tickets or sponsorship, call (203) 438-5485 or e-mail info@keelertavernmuseum.org .
