The manor home, originally constructed in 1900, is offered for $3.15 million. It has seven bedrooms, six full and three half-baths and 8,128 square feet of space.
Herrick, a lawyer who tinkered with engineering, successfully created a convertible aircraft -- a “Convertiplane” -- that operated with both conventional airplane and helicopter modes, and so offered vertical take-off and landing.
The HV-2A began flying successfully in 1936, could cruise at 100 mph and needed only 60 feet of runway to take off. There were varying models, but the HV-2A aircraft served as the main model for all future Convertiplanes. A large HV-2A propeller had been found in the garage. It was sent to the Smithsonian Institution, where it remains preserved and on display.
Herrick initially used the property at 77 High Ridge Ave. as his summer retreat. He eventually moved there permanently with his wife, Lois, and resided there until his 1955 death. Lois remained until her death in 1980.
The property has undergone numerous updates and changes. During some of those alterations, a British cannonball was unearthed. According to town records, the cannonball had been fired during the Battle of Ridgefield on Main Street, on April 27, 1777.
