Jakub lost his trumpet when a classmate, playing a prank, hid it in a bush at their bus stop in the morning. By the afternoon, it was gone.
Jakub worried he wouldn’t be able to play in his upcoming Christmas concert at Woodrow Wilson Middle School, and posted fliers at the bus stop looking for his instrument.
“I put so much hard work to have a chance to participate, and now I can’t. Please help me,” he wrote.
And help him people did.
The mother of one of Jakub’s classmates shared the flier on Facebook. Then the calls and texts poured in.
“They wanted Jakub to play at the concert,” Jakub’s mom, Lucyna Brzyzek, told Daily Voice.
Plenty of people called her from Clifton, but also from as far away as Florida, Arizona and California, Brzyzek said.
“One of them offered us a trumpet. One of them wanted to raise money to rent a new instrument for my son. Others wanted to pay for the lost rented trumpet. Others called to cheer us up and fill us with hope,” she said.
Jakub said, “I became so overwhelmed. I didn’t know that this many people would want to help.”
People also reached out to his school, he said. “They bombarded the school … I got called down to the office.”
A teacher ended up loaning Jakub a trumpet so he could play at the Christmas concert. And a kind family from Verona gave him a new trumpet of his own.
“Unfortunately, we never found the lost trumpet, but the story has a good end,” Lucyna Brzyzek said. “A beautiful end, because of the noble, kind people who helped along the way.”
Jakub will be playing his new trumpet at another holiday concert on Tuesday, Dec. 20, at Clifton High School. The event is open to the public. It starts at 7:30 p.m. and admission is $2.
“Happy holidays,” Jakub said.
