Dobbs Ferry Farmers Market Unfazed by Rain

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. -- While the rain may have deterred some of the crowd at the Dobbs Ferry Farmers Market, it didn't stop Joe Mercurio from setting up shop on Friday.

"It was fine, I mean there were less people, but that was to be expected," he said. "They were all afraid of the rain. I was too, I packed up a lot of stuff already just in case."

With a cloudy overcast and drizzling rain throughout the day, it was an afternoon that few dared venture out into without rain boots and an umbrella. While there was less than ideal weather for an outdoor market, it didn't seem to hurt the foot traffic much.

"[It was] just an average day, you know just like a nice weather day," Mercurio said. "I didn't see any lack of business. A couple of the other vendors didn't even show up."

Mercurio, who was filling in for his cousin as a vendor, was outside all day in the rain and shine selling all types of fresh meat.

"[We're] selling homemade sausage, homemade mozzarella, plain and smoked, and all the different types of cheeses imported from Italy," Mercurio said.

That's only the beginning though as Mercurio was also selling Italian bread, black pepper with prosciutto cheese sprinkled in, sun dried tomato, roasted peppers and even garlic and oil marinade.

As a vendor at the farmers market Mercurio was stepping into a different pair of shoes for a day, which is a little different from his usual day job as the owner of a dry cleaning delivery route. Even though he's only a part-time vendor, Mercurio can still recognize the regular customers when they walk up.

"[There are] a lot more [regulars] each week," he said. "They know what it tastes like and I ask them if they want to taste it and they say no just give it to me."

With a Stop & Shop just a couple hundred yards away, what is it that separates this homemade meat from the rest?

"These guys know what they're doing," Mercurio said. "At Stop & Shop its mass produced, its lower quality meat and it's not aged well enough."

The Dobbs Ferry Farmers Market isopen every Friday on Cedar Street from 10 a.m to-4 p.m. all summer long. Come out next week and try some of the fresh meat, fruit, vegetables and more.
