On Tuesday afternoon, Esty issued the following statement in response to Trump’s tweet:

“This morning’s comments are beneath the dignity of the highest office in America,” said Esty (D-Conn.). “The president should remove his tweets and apologize to Senator Gillibrand immediately. Our number one priority should be to do the work the American people elected us to do – to put politics aside and work together to grow our economy and create jobs. This sexist attack on Senator Gillibrand is a failure of leadership and demeaning and disrespectful to the American people – particularly American women. I earnestly hope it is never repeated.”

Esty was reacting to a tweet from Trump that he posted after Gillibrand called on him to resign after more than a dozen woman accused the president of sexual misconduct and harassment.

Here is the full tweet from Trump via @realDonaldTrump:

"Lightweight Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, a total flunky for Chuck Schumer and someone who would come to my office 'begging' for campaign contributions not so long ago (and would do anything for them), is now in the ring fighting against Trump. Very disloyal to Bill & Crooked-USED!"

Gillibrand called for Trump to resign Monday. She had previously called for U.S. Sen. Al Franken to resign after he was accused of groping women. Gillibrand has also said former President Bill Clinton should have resigned over his affair with a White House intern.

"You cannot silence me or the millions of women who have gotten off the sidelines to speak out about the unfitness and shame you have brought to the Oval Office," Gillibrand responded on Twitter.

On Monday, she said on CNN: "These allegations are credible; they are numerous. I've heard these women's testimony, and many of them are heartbreaking."

If Trump does not resign, Gillibrand said Congress should investigate his behavior.
