Norwalk Senator Says Mileage Tax Idea Is Dead

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- Senate Majority Leader Bob Duff (D-Norwalk) said Wednesday a proposed mileage tax for state drivers will be rejected.

“I do not support a mileage tax,'' Duff said in a press release on Wednesday. "The Department of Transportation can study it nine ways to Sunday, up, down, sideways and diagonally. It is an unproven idea and the Senate Democrats will not advance any future proposal to consider a mileage tax for a vote."

Duff said state Republicans were using the proposal as a "Trump-like" tactic, referring to the party's Presidential nominee, Donald Trump. " “Say it long enough and loud enough regardless of the truth and hope people will believe it,'' Duff said. "This issue was settled last year with strong statements in opposition from the legislature. Case closed.”

WTNH-TV reported Tuesday that Governor Dannel Malloy appeared to be support the ideal the study of a mileage tax. The state's highway infrastructure, sorely need in repair, and the Governor's ambitions for a $100 billion, 30-year highway rebuild have fueled speculation a mileage tax might be part of the state's plan to fund those initiatives.
