BRIDGEPORT, Conn. — Four days after she was shot in the head while siting in a car, a 26-year-old woman died Wednesday afternoon, Bridgeport Police said.
Elianna Cruz was shot just after 9 p.m. Saturday at 1001 E. Main St. and was rushed to Bridgeport Hospital, police said. She died at 3:10 p.m. Wednesday, according to a release from the Bridgeport Police Department.
She was in the passenger seat of a parked car when a suspect fired through the driver's side window at the male driver, police said. The bullet instead struck Cruz, police said.
An autopsy is scheduled to be performed by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, police said.
The shooting is being investigated by detectives, and police said there are strong leads in the case.
Anyone with information about this shooting death is asked to call the Bridgeport Police Department Tips Line at 203-576-TIPS (8477).
This was the second homicide of the year in Bridgeport. The first occurred on New Year's Day when a 23-year-old Bridgeport man died — three weeks after he was shot while walking on a city street, according to police.
Alexander Davis was struck by gunfire near Brooks Street and Jane Street on Dec. 11, police said. He had been in Bridgeport Hospital since the shooting.
The Office of Chief Medical Examiner ruled that Davis's death was a homicide.
Bridgeport ended 2016 with 10 homicides, down from 19 in 2015. The last homicide of 2016 occurred early on Christmas Eve when a 27-year-old man was shot to death on North Avenue. A Christmas Eve homicide also occurred in 2015, when a teenager who was an innocent passerby was shot to death when caught in gunfire.
