The chain-reaction crash, which occurred at about 12:40 p.m. Monday, began when Nancy A. Scott, 64, of Carmel, N.Y., who was traveling west on I-84, failed to slow down as the vehicles in front of her decreased their speed due to traffic, according to New York State Trooper Melissa McMorris.
Scott slammed into the back of a Toyota Avalon driven by Linda Laboy, 64, of Danbury. Laboy’s vehicle subsequently struck the rear of a BMW operated by Elizabeth Draus, 53, of Amsterdam, N.Y., McMorris said.
Draus’ vehicle then rear-ended a Jeep Wrangler driven by Gregory J. Chiovitti, 60, of Thomaston, Conn. As a result, Chiovitti’s vehicle ran into the back of an International Harvester truck driven by Ricky Hartung, 54, of Mount Bethel, Pa.
Laboy’s three passengers were seriously injured.
John Patton, 96, and Lois R. McKee, 67, of Danbury, suffered serious injuries and were transported to Danbury Hospital. David R. Patton, 65, was transported to Westchester Medical Center via LifeNet with life-threatening injuries.
Laboy was transported to Danbury Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Hartung, the sole occupant of the tractor-trailer, was not injured. Chiovitti and Draus reported minor injuries and refused further medical attention.
The highway was closed for several hours while the New York State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit investigated. The Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit also responded to the scene.
Also at the scene of the crash were members Brewster Fire Department, Emstar Ambulance, and the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office.
