Zeus is an 11-year-old German Shepherd who will be euthanized Wednesday as a result of his severe degenerative disorder. Zeus retired from the force May 20 due to this issue, and his health continued to decline since then. He joined the department in 2006 and was partnered with Officer Shawn Murray, with whom he continued to live with after his retirement.
During his career, Zeus was responsible for more than 250 narcotics arrests, performed hundreds of demonstrations for the public and conducted more than 50 tracks for missing or wanted individuals. During these tracks, he located six people who were in life-threatening situations and found six people who had fled the scene of crimes. The largest amount of narcotics Zeus was responsible for was the seizure of 10 pounds of marijuana in 2006.
The Ridgefield Police Department will honor Zeus Wednesday with his final ride. The ride will begin at police headquarters at 4:45 p.m. and take the following route: west on Governor Street, north on Route 35/Main Street, north on Route 7, ending at Ridgefield Veterinary Hospital.
Ridgefield officers will be joined by local law enforcement agencies to pay tribute to Zeus in his final ride. Members of the community are asked to gather on the sidewalks of Main Street along the route if they wish to pay tribute.
