Zeus joined the department in 2006 and was partnered with Officer Shawn Murray. During his career he was responsible for more than 250 drug arrests, and aided in more than 50 tracks for missing or wanted persons. He retired from the force in May 2014 and continued to live with Murray, until his declining health led to the decision to euthanize him.
Community members as well as police from neighboring towns joined Ridgefield officers in saying goodbye to Zeus Wednesday as he was taken on his last ride from Police Headquarters to Ridgefield Veterinary Hospital on Danbury Road.
Ridgefield police posted numerous tributes to Zeus on its Facebook page, and members of the community voiced their thanks and gratitude to the officer for all the work he has done for the town during his career.
"Zeus, it is with tears in our eyes that we must say goodbye," Ridgefield police wrote. "You were a valued member of our team and only did great things. It was an honor to work beside you and knowing that you were there always helped put our minds at ease. We know you would not have hesitated to lay down your life for any of us if we were ever faced with a life threatening situation. You wore the Ridgefield Police badge with Respect, Pride and Dignity. Thank you for keeping us all safe over the years. You will be dearly missed but never forgotten. Rest in Peace our friend."
