"We want to be safe" said Police Capt. Tom Comstock, adding that officers have been deployed to all the schools and the district has been put under heightened security.

"Instead of there being a lockdown its just making sure that the schools are secure," he said.

The shooting took place at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown. Some reports say the shooter has been killed, and CNN reported that two weapons were recovered from his body. The Hartford Courant reported "multiple deaths," including children.

In Ridgefield, the chief of police is meeting with the Board of Education to discuss what will happen as a result of the shooting.

Comstock also said the department sent a representative to the scene in Newtown to see what it could do and also to keep the Ridgefield department up to date on the shooting.
