RIDGEFIELD, Conn. -- A Waterbury man was arrested after police said he led state troopers on a pursuit in a car that had been stolen out of Ridgefield.

At around 11 p.m. on Monday, Connecticut State Police Troop A in Southbury received multiple calls of a dark-colored Audi that was driving erratically on I-84 westbound near exit 26. The license plate given by callers did not match the vehicle description, police said.

Troopers responded to the I-84 westbound exit 25A off-ramp in Waterbury to wait for the Audi to pass, and when they saw it they pulled out behind it. They followed it through a construction zone, and once it had exited they tried to pull it over, police said.

The driver of the Audi refused to stop and accelerated away from the troopers, according to police. A sergeant ahead of the pursuit slowed down traffic, forcing the Audi to pull over and stop because there was no place to go, police said.

While speaking with the driver, identified as 29-year-old Cornelius Coney of Waterbury, troopers learned that he had a suspended driver's license and that the Audi had been recently reported stolen from Ridgefield, police said. The troopers also found a small amount of methamphetamine and marijuana in the car, police said.

Coney was charged with operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license, operating a motor vehicle without insurance, misuse of plates, engaging police in pursuit, reckless driving, operating an unregistered motor vehicle, two counts of reckless endangerment, second-degree larceny, possession of a narcotic and possession of less than a half-ounce of marijuana. He was released after posting a $50,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 8.
