The accident was reported at 3:10 a.m. Tuesday between Exit 22 and Exit 23.

AMR Ambulance was first to arrive at the scene and notified the Fire Department that two victims were trapped inside the vehicle and needed to be extricated, according to Assistant Fire Chief George Gomola.

Fairfield firefighters used the jaws of life and other rescue tools to free the victims in less than 10 minutes.

The third occupant of the car had been ejected on impact and was dead at the scene, Gomola said.

"Our firefighters and the medics from AMR worked together to provide exceptional emergency medical care to the victims and to rapidly extricate them from a very heavily damaged vehicle," Gomola said. "The loss of life which occurred prior to our arrival is tragic, and our thoughts and prayers are extended to the victim and his family."

One victim was transported to St. Vincent's Medical Center in Bridgeport and the other to Bridgeport Hospital, both with non-life-threatening injuries, he said.

The driver of a second vehicle was transported to St. Vincent's Medical Center, also with non-life-threatening  injuries, he said.

The cause of the accident is under investigation by the Connecticut State Police.

I-95 was closed between Exit 22 and 23 northbound for a few hours overnight as the accident was investigated.

Firefighters responded from Engines 1 and 4 as well as Ladders 1 and 2.
