A "medical reprieve" has been granted to Stackowitz from the Georgia State Board of Pardons and Paroles, which his attorneys asked for, the News-Times said. Stackowitz suffers from a number of ailments, including cancer and heart problems, the News-Times reported.

After more than 48 years on the run, Georgia escapee Stackowitz was arrested in May by U.S. Marshals in Sherman.

On Aug. 22, 1968, he escaped from the infirmary at the Carroll County Prison Work Camp in Carrolton, Ga. At the time, he was 23 years old and was serving a 17-year sentence for "robbery by force," the U.S.Marshal said.

The fugitive investigation for Stackowitz, now 71, gained momentum when Georgia Department of Corrections investigators assigned to the U.S. Marshals Service Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force conducted a comprehensive investigation into the case and uncovered a possible alias identity for him, U.S. Marshals said in a statement.

Investigators then discovered an address on Route 39 in Sherman that was linked to the alias.

U.S. Marshals in Connecticut acted upon this information and were able to locate and arrest Stackowitz without incident.

Officials from Connecticut will still need to agree to supervise him through the end of his sentence, which is set to conclude in 2022, the New-Times reported.
