The victim's former attorney identified the victim as Dr. Robert George, a native of Darien, who owned the home on Stage Island Road, NECN said.

The cause of the fire, which was reported at 10:15 p.m. Monday, has not been determined, NECN said. The $2.3 million home appears to be a total loss, NECN said.

George was arrested in Darien in March on charges of assaulting his wife after a dispute over calling a substance abuse counselor for him turned violent, the Daily Voice reported last year. He was arrested in the fall on charges of violating a protective order by contacting his wife, the Darien News reported.

George was a former member of the Emergency Medical Services Review Committee and a former member of the District III Representative Town Meeting.
