If you live in the 138th it is important that you are aware that your current State Rep. Jan Giegler-R, voted AGAINST legislation that protects our families and communities from violence. In 2007, she voted NO to REPORTING OF LOST OR STOLEN FIREARMS. The bill “requires a gun owner to report the theft or loss of any firearm to the police”---something any responsible gun owner would have done anyway. Giegler took the side of the irresponsible when she voted NO. She voted NO to making gun trafficking a felony. In 2010, she voted NO to DOMESTIC VIOLENCE LAW AMENDMENTS. The law requested $19 from every marriage license issued for “shelter services for victims of household abuse and rape crisis services”. She then had the audacity to participate in The Danbury Women’s Center SAFEWALK to raise needed funds for these same emergency shelters. The official record shows she voted AGAINST women’s safety. She voted AGAINST the safety our children and schools when she voted NO to the post-Sandy Hook safety laws (SB 1160)—and then lied about her vote at the LWV Candidate’s Forum. The bi-partisan law passed, making CT gun laws the 2nd strongest in the country (The bill passed 105-44). Since this law passed, CT murders have decreased by 50 percent. She claims that the bill did not address mental health. In fact the bill did address mental health. Provisions were made for the early detection and treatment of mental illness by equipping schools and pediatricians with the necessary training and support. Public Policy Director, Daniela Giordano of National Alliance for the Mentally Ill - CT has said that the bill did a lot for detection and treatment of mental illness. If you go to Votemart.org/key votes/Jan Giegler, you will see that over the years she has voted AGAINST many bills would have benefited CT’s women, working families and economy, and saved taxpayer dollars: • May 2014- Voted NO for bill “Funding for the Public Campaign Finance Program” (passed 102-40) She then took the funds, even when no one ran against her. Isn’t that a waste of taxpayer dollars? • April 2014- Voted NO for a bill that “Prohibits Employers from Discriminating Against Unemployed Applicants” (passed 81-55) district (Danbury, New Fairfield, northern part of Ridgefield), • March 2014- Voted NO for a bill that “Increases Minimum Wage” (passed 89-53) It has been recently estimated that raising the minimum wage would save the government billions of dollars, because then families would not need to supplement their income with food stamps and other social welfare benefits. • April 2013- Voted NO for bill that that “Authorizes Early & Absentee Voting (passed 90-49) She claims that this would lead to fraud. IN FACT, many studies have shown, including a 4 year study by the Bush administration, that early and absentee voting does not sway election results. In fact, Giegler and her ilk would like to prevent certain groups of people from voting. • May 2012- Voted NO for bill the “Requires Corporations to Identify Top Donors for Campaign Contributions” (passed 94-54) Shouldn’t voters know which special interests are the biggest supporters of candidates? What does Giegler and her kind have to hide? • May 2011- Voted NO for bill the “Establishes the Connecticut Healthcare Partnership” (passed 88-48) She voted NO to making health care available to everyone. • May 2010- Voted NO for bill “Increasing the Use of Renewable Energy”(passed 81-40) Renewable energy is a new high growth industry and will help create jobs. It is clear that Jan Giegler takes her cues from the NRA and rabid right wing Connecticut Citizens Defense League rather than listens to her constituents. She was the only Republican from the local delegation that voted NO to gun safety. She has regularly voted against women’s interests. She has a 100 percent score by the ultra-conservative Family Institute of Connecticut, that is against women’s reproductive rights. She has proven she can’t be trusted to be honest about her voting record. On Tuesday, Nov. 4 who, rather than representing moneyed special interests, will represent all the people of the 138th, you have the opportunity to replace her by voting for Henry Hall, district.
