Walter E. Evans, 88, Of Ridgefield, World War II Navy Veteran

RIDGEFIELD, Conn. - Walter E. Evans of Ridgefield died Sunday, July 27. He was 88.

Evans was born Aug. 4, 1925, in Ridgefield, the son of Walter O. and Augusta (Stahl) Evans. He attended Ridgefield schools, spending his first four years of school in the Old Branchville Schoolhouse. He moved to the high school on East Ridge in 1934. He graduated from Bryant College. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy.

In 1947, he started working at the Gilbert & Bennett Wire Mill of Georgetown, retiring in 1987 as its treasurer. He served as a past director of the former Ridgefield Bank, president of the Branchville Fresh Air Association, a trustee of the Ridgefield Cemetery Association and treasurer of the Ridgefield Old Timers Association.

Evans is survived by his wife, Marlene (Walter) Evans; son, Mark E. Evans (Danette) of Littleton, Colo.; stepchildren, Gregg Garofalo and his wife, of Newtown, Richard Garofalo (Beverly) of Wethersfield, Lisa Fritz and Terri Fisher (John) of Durham; and 11 grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents; and sister, Arline Evans Turoczi.

Calling hours are Monday, Aug. 11, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m in Kane Funeral Home, 25 Catoonah St., Ridgefield. Services will take place Monday, Aug. 11, at 1 p.m. in the funeral home with the Rev. Charles Hambrick-Stowe, senior pastor of the First Congregational Church of Ridgefield officiating. Interment will take place in Fairlawn Cemetery, Ridgefield, with military honors.
