James F. Whalen, 81, Of Ridgefield, Senior VP United States Trust Company

RIDGEFIELD, Conn. - James F. Whalen of Ridgefield and Bonita Springs, Fla., died Monday, July 15. He was 81.

Whalen was born July 24, 1931, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Elizabeth and James Whalen. He grew up in Larchmont, N.Y, and graduated from Lehigh University in 1953. After marriage he raised his family in Greenwich. He was a former member of the Milbrook Club. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during the Korean War. He began his career in Human Resources at the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company of N.Y. In 1969, he joined the United States Trust Company of New York, retiring in 1992 as senior vice president of Human Resources.

Whalen is survived by his wife, Leila (O'Connor) Whalen; daughters, Leila (Philip) Longo of Bedford, N.Y., and Mary Whalen of Branford; son, James F. Whalen (Jeff) (Deborah) of Wilmette, Ill.; and 11 grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents; and sisters, Mary and Ellen.

Calling hours are Sunday, July 21 from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Kane Funeral Home, 25 Catoonah St., Ridgefield. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, July 22 at 10:15 a.m. in St. Mary Church, Ridgefield. Burial will take place in St. Mary-Putnam Cemetery, Greenwich.
