SOUTHBURY, Conn. - George Thomas Deakin of Southbury, formerly of Danbury, died Wednesday, Dec. 3. He was 85.
Deakin was born June 10, 1929, in Danbury, to George Martin and Ethel (Wright) Deakin. He graduated from Danbury High School, class of 1947. He was a Veteran of the Korean War, serving with the United States Army. He was a parishioner of St. Peter Church. He grew up on Washington Avenue and graduated from St. Peter School. He worked as a hatter with his uncle at the Wright Hat Company in Bethel. At the age of 14 he joined the Citizens Hose Volunteer Fire Co and remained a volunteer fireman for 71 years. He was also the depot manager at Pepperidge Farm in Ridgefield. He retired from the News-Times where he worked in the Circulation Dept for 25 years.
Deakin is survived by his wife, Lota Dee; children, David Deakin (Carol), Matthew Deakin, Michael Deakin, Christine Deakin Dunleavy, Patrick Deakin (fiancée, Barbara), Robert Deakin, Karen Youngstrom (Glenn), and Nancy Dixon; 12 grandchildren; sister, Anne (Deakin) Durkin (William); and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; brother, David Deakin; and sister, Mary Kolwicz.
Calling hours are Friday, Dec. 5 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Cornell Memorial Home, 247 White St., Danbury. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6 at St. Peter Church, 104 Main St., Danbury. Interment of cremated remains will be at Wooster Cemetery at the direction of the family.
