RIDGEFIELD, Conn. Dorothy Marcia Barlow Bissell, a former Ridgefield resident, died Aug. 5 at the Jewish Home of Fairfield. She was 89.
Born June 9, 1923, in Dedham, Mass., Bissell received a bachelor's degree in art history from Wheaton College. She continued her education at Radcliffe College with a yearlong graduate program in personnel management.
After graduation, Bissell worked in Boston as assistant to the personnel director for C. Crawford Hollidge Ltd. There she met her husband, Roger W. Bissell. After a six-month courtship, they married on Valentine's Day in 1948.
As the family grew, they moved to Walpole, Mass., before moving to Stony Brook, N.Y. Ultimately, the family settled in Ridgefield in 1975. She quickly became involved in the women's fellowship the First Congregational Church. She was a member of the Gibson Circle and more recently of the Elizabeth Circle.
After becoming a widow, she was employed by B. J. Dolan Co. in Bethel for six years before retiring in 1988.
Bissell is survived by five children, Douglas H. (Virginia) Bissell, of Waynesboro, Va., Marcia L. Bissell, of Fairfield, Benjamin B. (Lori) Bissell, of Trumbull, Cynthia A. Bissell, of Branford, and Jonathan R. Bissell, of Danbury; and three grandsons and two nieces. She was predeceased by her husband, Roger W. Bissell; her parents, Stanley and Ethel Barlow; a sister, Priscilla B. Johnson; and a brother, Robert S. Barlow.
A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at First Congregational Church in Ridgefield. Burial will follow at Canton Corner Cemetery in Canton, Mass., at a later date. Edmund N. Dougiello Funeral Home in Fairfield is handling arrangements.
