Take Lifeguard Classes In Ridgefield To Get Certification

RIDGEFIELD, Conn. -- Two sessions of lifeguard certification courses are being offered to residents 15 years old and older in April and in August.

Students will learn the duties and responsibilities of a lifeguard and how to carry them out in a professional manner. They will learn a number of lifeguard techniques such as surveillance, rescue procedures and how to care for someone who may have a head, neck or back injury.

Participants must pass a pre-course skills test and attend all classes in order to obtain certification. All fees include a $150 non-refundable deposit in the event that a participant does not pass the pre-course skills test and is ineligible for the training program.

The Spring pre-course skills test will take place from 4-6 p.m. Saturday, April 11 at the Recreation Center Pool. The registration deadline is Saturday, April 4. The Spring session will take place from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday, April 13 through Friday, April 17 at Barlow Mountain Pool.

The summer session pre-course skills test will be from 9-11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 7 at the Recreation Pool. The registration deadline is July 31. The summer session will be from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 10 through Friday, Aug. 14 at Barlow Mount Pool.

Skills tested are as follows:

  • Swim 550 yards continuously, using the following strokes: - 200 yards front crawl; using rhythmic breathing & propellant kick - 200 yards breaststroke; using a pull, breathe, kick sequence - 150 yards of either front crawl or breaststroke or a combination
  • Starting in the water, swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object from the bottom, return to the surface, swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the object and exit the water without using a ladder/steps within one minute, 40 seconds
  • Swim five yards; submerge and retrieve three dive rings placed 5 yards apart in 4-7 feet of water; resurface and swim 5 yards to the side of the pool

Fees are $350 for members and $350 for non-members for five classes.
