These Fairfield County towns are not only among the safest in Connecticut but in the country.

The top five were all from Fairfield County with Ridgefield, Wilton, Weston, Easton and Redding finishing in that order. New Canaan and Newtown finished eighth and ninth respectively. Greenwich at 15, Monroe at 17 and Bethel at 19 rounded out the rankings.

Information was culled from the 2014 FBI Crime Report, which is the most recent available. Data shows an overall statewide violation rate 40 percent lower than the national average, with the property crime rate 25 percent lower.

All of the listed towns had less than 0.44 violent crimes and 8.45 property crimes per 1,000 residents. Within the 20 safest cities roughly three crimes were reported for every 1,000 citizens and only two murders between all 20 cities.

To create the list, Safewise reviewed the most recent FBI statistics and population figures. All cities with less than 5,000 residents and without a complete crime report were not considered.

The numbers of reported violent and property crimes were analyzed city by city in order to form a calculation of how likely these crimes are to occur within 1,000 people in each city.
