Value Penguin sourced all of its data from FBI violent and property crime statistics from 2012. Violent crimes were given a heavier weight (90 percent) versus property crimes (10 percent) to arrive at an overall "crime score." The lower the crime score, the safer the municipality.

Ridgefield was ranked first among the 120 communities in the survey with a "crime score" of 39, well below the state average of 336.

Ridgefield's property crime rate was nearly 88 times higher than the violent crime rate, which according to the survey, is virtually nonexistent.

The safest communities were all in Fairfield County with Easton, Darien, Wilton and Redding rounding out the top five.

Other Fairfield County communities were ranked as follows:

  • No. 6: Weston
  • No. 8: New Canaan
  • No. 9: Greenwich
  • No. 24: Westport
  • No. 48: Fairfield
  • No. 54: Danbury
  • No. 71: Stamford
  • No. 77: Norwalk
  • No 87: Bridgeport

The least safest communities were New Haven and Hartford with crime scores of 1,798 and 1,622, respectively.
