Ridgefield Lawmaker Pushes Petition To Help Prevent Child Heat Deaths

RIDGEFIELD, Conn. – State Rep. John Frey (R-Ridgefield) is dispersing a petition for federal support into the research and development of tools to prevent heat-related child deaths in cars, reports The News-Times.

A memorial service was held July 13 for Benjamin Jacob Seitz at the Jesse Lee Memorial Church in Ridgefield.The 15-month-old died after being left in a hot car.

A petition released July 14 by the nonprofit group kidsandcars.org requests assistance from the Obama administration to support research into technology that would remind drivers of the presence of children in the backseat of cars when they park, Frey said.

"There are a lot of people that are trying to have some good come out of a horribly tragic event," Frey was quoted as saying. "At the top of that list is raising awareness, so that these unfathomable things don't take place again."

The petition comes after the death 15-month-old Benjamin Seitz on July 7 in Ridgefield. As previously reported by The Daily Voice, Benjamin died in a hot car after his father forgot to drop him at day care on his way to work. He was the son of Ridgefield residents Kyle Seitz and Lindsey Rogers-Seitz.
