Here is how readers voted in a nonscientific poll asking what they thought of cellphone service in Ridgefield:
- It's great, we don't need another cell tower: 9 percent
- It's pretty poor, but I don't want to see another cell tower in town: 7 percent
- It's good enough for a rural town: 5 percent
- It's really poor, we can't build more cell towers fast enough: 71 percent
- Cellphone service doesn't matter. We need to preserve open space: 8 percent
The applicants seeking to build the tower are Homeland Towers and New Cingular Wireless. The plan is being considered by the town Planning and Zoning Commission. It must also be approved by the State Siting Council.
Ridgefield residents have long demanded improvements in the town's cell service, especially in the northern and western areas of town. The outcry increased after virtually all of Ridgefield was left without power after Hurricane Sandy struck a year ago.
But VoterResident1 posted objections to the proposal in a posting on The Daily Voice poll. The reader's objections include:
- Placing a cellphone tower in a purely residential neighborhood;
- Sacrificing the cultural and historic legacy of the town by erecting a cell tower adjacent to a Revolutionary War site;
- Possibly losing home values near a cell tower; and
- Possibly causing a costly legal battle over the proposal.
