The charge is possession of a firearm by an individual who is an unlawful user of and addicted to any controlled substance and carries a possible sentence of 10 years in prison.

Navin was originally charged by criminal complaint, according to U.S. Attorney for Connecticut Deirdre M. Daly. He has been detained without bond since his arrest on Sept. 8.

The arrest came after police searched his home in connection with his parents' disappearance and found two firearms, bullets and evidence of drug use.

As alleged in the criminal complaint, on Aug. 7, federal, state and local law enforcement agencies began investigating the disappearance of Navin's parents, Jeffrey and Jeanette Navin of Easton.

As part of the investigation, investigators conducted a court-authorized search of Kyle Navin's home on Aug. 13 and seized two firearms and numerous rounds of ammunition from his bedroom.

In a second search Aug. 19, law enforcement officials located and seized numerous heroin brand-stamped glassine baggies with heroin residue, hypodermic needles, empty prescription bottles for oxycodone and prescription bottles containing other controlled substances.

Investigators also recovered a receipt from a shooting range issued on Aug. 5.

In a court-authorized search of Navin’s cellphone, numerous text messages discussed his use of heroin, oxycodone and Xanax.

Navin is the last person known to have seen his parents, who were reported missing to police on Friday, Aug. 7. Their Dodge pickup truck was found in a commuter parking lot off the Merritt Parkway in Westport two days later.

State Police took over the investigation after traces of blood and a bullet were found in the pickup.

Jeannette and Jeffrey Navin, who recently moved from Weston to Easton, grew up in Westport. Kyle Navin is a graduate of Weston High School.

Jeffrey Navin is president of J&J Refuse in Westport, and Jeanette Navin is a school library aide at Weston Intermediate School. Kyle Navin also works at J&J Refuse as the operations manager.

State Police have searched landfills and transfer stations unsuccessfully for any signs of the remains of the missing couple.

Kyle Navin's arraignment has not been scheduled. His case has been assigned to Senior U.S. District Judge Warren W. Eginton in Bridgeport.

The ongoing investigation is being conducted by the FBI Bridgeport Violent Crimes Task Force, Connecticut State Police Western District Major Crime Squad and Easton Police Department, with the assistance of the State’s Attorney’s Office for the Fairfield Judicial District and the Westport, Weston and Bridgeport Police Departments.
