Fallen Trees, Wires Block Roads In Ridgefield After Storm; Trains Delayed

Updated: RIDGEFIELD, Conn. -- A number of roads in Ridgefield were partially or completely blocked by fallen trees and wires after a powerful thunderstorm ripped through the town and the region on Tuesday afternoon.

In the wake of the storm, over half of Ridgefield was left without power as well. The highest number was 5,425 without power, but that number had dropped slightly to 5,407 by 7 p.m., according to Eversource. That is still 47 percent of the town's customers. 

Main Street in Ridgefield was closed from Prospect Street to Route 116 due to a downed tree. 

Other roads with closures after the storm included Farrar Lane, Gilbert Street, Farmingville Road, Main Street (near Cannonfield), Old Quarry Road, Route 7 near Stonehenge Road, Route 35 near High Ridge, Barrack Hill Road near No. 66, Ramapoo Road, Overlook Drive, Ligi’s Way, Grove Street, according to the Ridgefield Press.

Metro-North also reported delays on the Danbury Branch on Tuesday during the height of the commute due to a tree down in the vicinity of Redding. The tree was cleared after a couple of hours and service returned to normal by early evening.

Redding also was experiencing massive power failures after the storm with 1,917 outages, nearly half the town. As of 6 p.m., other power outages in the area included 

  • Danbury: 86 outages
  • Easton: 1,130 outages, up from 465 outages
  • Fairfield: 21 outages 
  • Redding: 1,919 outages, or 49 percent of the town
  • Ridgefield: 5,047, or 47 percent of the town; down from 5,425 outages
  • Weston: 38 outages, down from a high of 695 
  • Wilton: 4 outages
