Average gas prices in Connecticut dropped from $2.51 to $2.50 compared to last week, while nationally prices are down to $2.34 from $2.35. However, the Fairfield County area is seeing average prices of $2.58 this week, according to AAA Northeast.
Additionally, average Connecticut and national prices are 14 cents and 12 cents higher than they were at this time last year, respectively.
According to AAA Northeast, declines in prices could be due to crude oil prices that are just under $50 a barrel, as well as plans by Russia and Saudi Arabia to extend oil production costs into March 2018. The United States continues to step up its own oil production, AAA Northeast said, and with Memorial Day two weeks away, it looks like U.S. prices may stabilize and drivers will see a benefit at the pumps during the more expensive summer season.
AAA Northeast reported that prices throughout the state were much lower than in Fairfield County. Average gas prices in both the New Haven/Meriden and Greater Hartford areas were $2.48, while New London/Norwich saw average prices of $2.49.
Overall, Connecticut's gas prices are the 11th highest in the country. Hawaii has the highest, with $3.06, followed by California at $2.98. South Carolina saw the lowest prices at $2.01, followed by Oklahoma at $2.07.
