Donovan released a statement via Twitter on the Friday incident, saying it was difficult for students to stand by as an adult man yelled insults at their classmates.

"An intoxicated man was in the Danbury High student parking lot holding a 'Trump' lawn sign during dismissal," Donovan said. "The man was on school grounds to pick up a relative and was being driven by someone else.

"From the information gathered so far, the man got out of the car and approached several students in a threatening way while making loud, disparaging comments about our immigrant population," he said.

A video posted on Twitter shows the man, who carried a Trump sign over his head, yelling, "You'll be out of the country you [expletive] illegals," as he points at passing students in the school parking lot.

"Soon after an altercation took place between the man and one of the students who has not yet been identified the police were notified, on the scene, and are continuing to investigate the issue," Donovan said in the statement.

"Danbury High School prides itself on its diversity. Our students understand and respect everyone's rights to celebrate and/or protest, but had a difficult time standing by watching an adult male insult their fellow classmates," he said. "We are working with the Danbury Police Department to further investigate the matter."

On Saturday, Danbury police confirmed they were investigating the incident.

Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton said the incident was "outrageous."

"Danbury PD is reviewing and investigating the incident," Boughton said in a statement. "I have spoken to the superintendent, chief of police and Principal [Dan] Donovan in the last twenty four hours regarding this incident.

"Needless to say, it is outrageous, and offensive to our entire community. Danbury is a diverse and proud community, and we will not stand idly by while our students are harassed and intimidated."

No charges have been filed in the case, police said.
